This woman in Providence was sent to the municipal court for something she didn’t do.
Judge Frank Caprio reviewed the traffic violations “under her name” since the vehicle used when these violations were tallied to her. Judge Caprio asked her if she drives a Chevrolet, which she immediately responded it was probably the father of her kids.
Judge Caprio stated that it has a parking ticket.
He reviewed all the other parking tickets tagged to her vehicle. There was another one in Darwin’s Street, which amounted to $100. Another one was around six years ago on Broadway for a $30 ticket.
Since all these parking tickets were dated years back and haven’t been paid, it grew on an interest.
It depends on different states in the country, but a parking ticket will most likely lead your car to be clamped and towed. Your fine would also go up if it’s past 90 days and could multiply. If it goes high enough, you’ll be summoned to court, or the collections agency will ask for the payment from you. It can also hurt your credit score severely.
To this single mom’s dismay, the judge said both tickets had tripled since.
The worst part is she didn’t know anything about it until she arrived in court that day. She told the judge that she went there and asked about all the tickets one more time to pay. After she heard how much she would probably pay, she was in disbelief.
Good thing that Judge Frank Caprio was known for his compassionate verdicts in Providence.
Judge Caprio became famous for an online show called Caught in Providence. Their social media and YouTube channel feature Judge Caprio and Inspector Ziggy Quinn and the court’s unique way of giving verdicts to people’s violations.
For Judge Caprio, what he wants is just to give people justice.
Often, we would think of justice with fines, punishments, and jail time. But for him, he listens to people’s backstories because there’s always more to an individual than their violation, just like this mother of three that was in his courtroom that day.
He knew exactly what to do with this situation.
“I’m not gonna hold you responsible for the actions of the father of these children. I’m not gonna embarrass you by asking you questions, but my sense is that he is not meeting his obligations as he should be.”
That’s when he called her daughter, Valerie, to the judge’s bench.
She asked the kid what the best thing would be to make her mommy happy: fine her $175 or just let her go and pay nothing. At first, she didn’t understand the question and said her mother should pay the fine.
This led to a light moment in the room.
The judge repeated the options in a manner that the kid would understand, and when Valerie said, “free to go,” that’s exactly what Judge Caprio did. He let her go, not paying a single penny. He understood very well that the woman in front of him was trying to make ends meet for her kids and was just in a bad situation because of someone else.
In a world where a lot of wrongs are happening, Judge Caprio is doing everything right.
