Today, there are already a lot of modern dance styles that have emerged. However, it doesn’t mean that the dance styles of the past have died down or aren’t relevant anymore. In fact, there are still people who know how to dance the classics. Furthermore, there are also a lot of dance competitions for these classic dances all over the world.

For example, the Shag competition is quite popular in the US

Believed to be originated in the beaches of South Carolina, this dance is all about improvisations following a rhythmic six-count Swing pattern. Usually accompanied by “beach music”, this is a fun social dance that you can do with a partner. However, recently, Shag has become a recognized dance in National and International dance competitions.

Who knows how many Shag dancing competitions are held every year just in the United States alone? One of the popular and longest-running Shag dancing competitions is the National Shag Dancing Championships (NSDC) which is usually held at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Sadly, it’s just unfortunate that they can’t do it this year because of the pandemic, thus, they are forced to postpone it. Hopefully, they can make it by next year.

For this year, let’s look back to one of the champions from 2018

In 2018, dance couple Jay Rollins and Tobitha Stewart had been crowned as the 2018 NSDC Master Shag Champions. They are highly skilled dancers that have shown their worth on every dance floor they stepped on, only at that time, they completely dominated the NSDC stage with their smooth but electrifying dance moves.

Rollins and Stewart uploaded the video of their performance on YouTube. As you can see, they stepped on the dancefloor bringing their big smiles and confidence. When they arrived at the center, “Boogie The Joint” by Buddy Skipper And The Code Blues Band then played on the speakers.

At that moment, you could already see the two showing off their strong chemistry along with their fluid footwork. Most importantly, their synchronization is just beyond perfect.

Despite it being a serious competition, you could clearly see how Rollins and Stewart were enjoying themselves on that stage. It was like they’re just trying to casually boogie on the dancefloor like it’s their own world.

Throughout the performance, that fun aura that they exuded never faded away. It’s no wonder they won first place in that competition.

Apparently, the two already had years of experience with Shag dancing

They have a couple of great achievements from their Shag dancing career, and Tobitha’s most impressive one was when she was inducted into the National Living Legends of Dance with his husband Ashley Stewart in 2015.

Rollins has inducted the same honor in 2018. Before then, he was racking up awards and places in different Shag dancing competitions. Now, both Stewart and Rollins are successful Shag instructors, bringing this classy fashion of dancing even to the newer generations.
