Star Wars has no doubt permeated pop culture like no other film before.
It brings together elements of space, humanity, conflict, and even memorable candid scenes that speak to the hearts and minds of any viewer who watches. What makes the series even more possible is the string of highly relatable characters that truly shine in how they progress.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is a star amongst the character lineup and an easy crowd favorite. His knowledge of the Force and incomparable wisdom in manipulating it has garnered much praise and affection from all Star Wars fans.
What happens when the love for a character takes a complete life of its own?
That’s what happened to this one man who decided to permanently immortalize Obi-Wan by having an elaborate portrait made of him which he gifted his parents. We swear we cannot make this stuff up!
Holidays are right around the corner and Ryan Buchanan had been storming up some brilliant ideas. He devised the crazy idea back in Christmas of 2018 and decided to pursue the idea into a reality. Coming from Utah, his parents are deeply religious folk that are active members of The Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-Day Saints (also known as Mormons).
It was common to have a portrait of Jesus Christ in the home as he grew up and he started to wonder what to do with such an idea. It came to him suddenly, but he knew he had arrived at a critical moment in his decision making. He knew what gift to get his parents this Christmas.
The day finally came when it was time to unveil all of the Christmas presents.
Buchanan was very excited, and nervous to present his gift to his parents which seemed eager to receive their son’s present. He hands his folks a rectangular gift that’s wrapped in polka-dot wrapping. After tearing off the wrapping, what comes next is a bit stunning- to say the least.
Ryan’s parents turned to him to let him know they’ve never seen a picture like that before of Jesus and how great it turned out. His parents had no idea who it was!
They completely mistook the image of Jesus for Sir Ewan McGregor, the actor that plays Obi-Wan Kenobi. He stunts his classic Jedi robe portrait style bearing that immaculate grin that a wise Obi-Wan would carry about him.
The mischievous act went completely under the radar as planned!
Ryan posted the picture online after hanging it up on his parent’s place.
He posted it with the captions,
“I’ve made a huge mistake. Mom loves her Jesus Christmas present and I’m not sure how to get out of this thing alive when she figures out.”
The secret was that Ryan actually was inspired by another Redditor that had come up with the idea that Obi-Wan looked faintly like Jesus Christ. The bill fits perfectly since Ryan was already a bit of a prankster who wasn’t scared to see his pranks land on someone like his parents.
What’s funny is that the Mormon Church themselves featured the Ewan McGregor portrait on the cover of one of their Sunday programs! One of the designers claimed they knew who it was, but decided to play along with the idea and it was just beyond tempting at that point.
Ryan can’t wait to find out his parent’s reaction once they find out who’s actually in the portrait.
