Danger appears to lurk in the most unsuspecting moments. One can never be too careful when it comes to taking precautions especially if it will save your life. All it takes is a scary tangle with death to realize one should never commit the same mistake twice.

In Evergreen, Colorado, Winston the dachshund came to his best friend’s aid when a mountain lion attacked.

His 15-year old Chiweenie pal, Mijo, was brutally injured by a cougar who came out of nowhere.

Puma’s are typically lone, opportunistic hunters that search for food from dusk to dawn. They usually take their prey from behind and on average will kill a deer about once a week.

It was rather unusual to find a cougar in such a suburban setting, let alone attacking the way it did. Cougars mainly try to avoid human contact and so do their best to stay away from locations inhabited by people.

The incident occurred when their human masters, Lindsay Golden and Sarah Moore, were about to head over to Sarah’s mother’s house to watch a speech from Joe Biden.

Unnoticed by their humans, the pair silently strolled out of the house through an open door.

Suddenly, a young mountain lion took advantage of the situation and pounced for an attack. Without a second to spare, Winston dashed at the mountain lion with all his courage and began to bark heavily at it!

“This is his best friend, so I’m not surprised that when he was screaming, that he chased after him,” Moore, Winston’s owner, told 9 News.

The dachshund did not lose focus and kept chasing the mountain lion for some time before the cat finally decided to let Mijo go.

The poor Chiweenie was immediately rushed to the emergency vet clinic on Friday for necessary treatment. He suffered major wounds including a lost right eye, scratches, and even a seizure the same night of the incident.

The neurologist even suggested an MRI due to a right cortical deficiency. A GoFundMe has been set up in order to help pay for Mijo’s medical bills.

“He’s got a lot of heart,” Moore added. “A 20-pound dog with the courage of a 200-pound dog.”

The viral story has caught the attention of many people around the world. The donation page has been able to garner over $11,500. It’s crazy to think about what can happen when you reach out to others for help.

There’s a fuel that Mijo has that’s unlike any dog his size.

His small size doesn’t compare to his huge heart and how much he’s pushed himself to recover from the frightful event. Here you can see him showing off his proud howl to show you that he’s still got a lot left in the tank. His owner, Lindsay Golden, agrees that she will have to keep a better eye on him from now on.

Let’s not forget that the real hero of this tale was none other than Winston the dachshund.

His ferocious barks along with his persistent attitude allowed for Winston to come out with his life still intact. The brave dog has a very close relationship with Winston and the two rarely ever leave each other’s sight.

It’s an important reminder to always keep an eye out for your pets. They’re always so curious to explore their surroundings that they can sometimes land themselves in a heap of trouble. In this case, curiosity lured the dog and got a pretty nasty kitty on the receiving end.
