What if we told you that everything you thought you knew about hanging up Christmas lights is wrong? Well, it turns out most people have been stringing up their festive holiday accessories in an entirely incorrect way on their trees. Thankfully, some helpful and informative TikTokers are available to correct all of our mistakes.
Take this video from TikToker Liz Lovery (@LizLovery). This woman and her nicely alliterated name said that you should be hanging your Christmas lights vertically as opposed to horizontally.

This advice is in contrast to how most people hang up their lights. There is something very natural about wrapping the lights around your tree, but this is not the most efficient use of your decorations.
There are actually multiple reasons to string your lights up vertically, and Liz Lovery explains them in her video.
“Something really cool that I learned on TikTok is that when you are putting your Christmas lights on your Christmas tree, instead of wrapping around the tree, you actually put them up and down. This way, you use less lights, if a string goes out, you can easily change them and it’s just a whole lot easier,” Lovery says in the video.
Lovery points to 2 main reasons to hang your lights vertically and not horizontally.
You use fewer lights on your tree, and it’s easier to replace bulbs that have gone out.
The video has already amassed over 12 million views! The popularity of Lovery’s video points to just how excited some people get about getting their trees all dolled up for the holidays.
Liz Lovery’s lovely little lessons about lights were inspired by another TikTok user named Clare Hooper (@mrsclarehoops). These short little TikTok videos are revolutionizing how we decorate our Christmas trees!
Hooper’s TikTok video has been viewed even more times than Liz Lovery’s, with over 2.3 million views. In the video, Hooper says it used to be part of her job to decorate Christmas trees and she liked to use a zig-zag pattern when stringing lights.

“If you are coiling your Christmas lights, you’re doing it wrong. Decorating Christmas trees used to be part of my job. We used the zig-zag method. It means you don’t waste lights around the back of your tree and if a set breaks, you can take them off really easily,” Hooper says in her video.
The zig-zag pattern also creates a nice pattern on your tree. Think of just how great these lights will look after you have hung up all your favorite ornaments as well.
Christmas is one of the most exciting times of the year for many people. Having a beautifully decorated tree is a tradition that many Christmas-lovers enjoy above all else.
It might take a bit of practice to make hanging your lights vertically feel natural but, in the end, you will have a breathtaking tree that makes all your guests jealous. And, isn’t that the true meaning of Christmas?
