But one of the most timeless and unforgettable looks, is Olivia Newton-John’s black leather jacket lined with striking red silk in the hit musical, Grease.
It’s not just the jacket – the entire dance scene for “You’re the One That I Want” remains a fan-favourite from that generation.
Olivia Newton-John (alongside co-star John Travolta) leads the show, playing Sandy Olsson in the 1978 musical, and rockin’ a wild leather outfit.
It’s been said that she was sewn into the pants for the scene. Surely she must have been dying of heat on that summer day!?
But boy, does she look cool.
One fan, a billionaire who has chosen to remain anonymous, was at the Property of Olivia Newton-John charity event when the iconic leather jacket went up for auction.
Since being diagnosed with cancer in 1992, she opened the Olivia Newton John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in Australia. The auction event took place to raise money for her charity.
The unidentified buyer and self-proclaimed “number one fan” of Olivia Newton-John’s won the bid and bought the jacket for a mere $243,200 (pfft… pocket change).
The anonymous buyer recently met up with Olivia, now 71-years-old and looking amazing. He brought a large pink gift-wrapped box along with him.
Olivia Newton-John said she recognized the man’s face, but couldn’t identify him.
He read her a note that he prepared before meeting with her, which said:
“The odds of beating recurrent cancer using the newest emergent therapies is 1,000-fold greater than someone appearing out of the blue, buying your most famous and cherished icon, and returning it to you, which is what I am going to do right now.”
She gasped and was so touched by his gesture that it brought tears to her eyes. She then thanked him with a big hug.
“This jacket belongs to you and the collective soul of those who love you, those for whom you are the soundtrack of their lives.” – anonymous buyer
He even offered to provide her with help or trusted medical advice if she is ever in need.
She is now battling cancer for the third time in her life, one of the reasons this charity foundation is so close to her heart.
After their heartfelt moment, she unwrapped the gift and was once again reunited with her beautiful leather jacket. Olivia was absolutely beaming with excitement; laughing, bouncing and hugging her gift-giver with a smile from ear to ear.
Christmas certainly came early this year!
The billionaire’s selfless gesture has definitely just made him a friend for life! Not only are the proceeds from his purchase going directly to her foundation, but she will get to keep the jacket as a fond memory.
Her performance in Grease earned her various nominations and awards, including a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress, and an American Music Award for favourite Rock/Pop album.
