After the holidays, it is always tough to go back to work and to the reality of our day-to-day routine. New Year just happened and accepting the fact that the celebrations are now over definitely gives us that feeling of loneliness, knowing that we’re going to wait another year just to experience the holidays once more.

At Viking Direct, an office supplies mail-order company located in the UK, January blues is definitely present and to make everyone in the office forget about this feeling, the boss decided that employees should decorate their desks. Everyone was quick to follow, including the creative team.

And, being the creative team, they decided to make their desk design more special by doing something that nobody expected: a giant cardboard castle! They challenged themselves to complete the design within that same day and to surprise their colleagues the following morning.

Their theme was quite an ambitious one, but the team was determined to get rid of the January blues and focused on how they would be able to create their target desk design. They began working on the walls of their castle and they did this by using two panels both 2m x 1m in length.

To give the walls more strength and stability, these panels were connected in an overlapping manner. The team used glue guns to attach the panels to each other. All in all, they used around 80 glue sticks to complete the job.

The creative team is composed of four members. Two were assigned to cut bricks made of cardboard and the other two were assigned to stick them to the panels. This was done to make the walls look as if they were actual castle walls that are made of bricks.

One of the most difficult parts of the task was figuring out how to make the towers stand. They were over 3 meters high and they needed some amazing folding techniques to really make them steady.

After completely sticking all of the bricks to the castle walls, the team got ready to stand everything up, including the towers. It was not easy at all, and some walls needed to be really assisted for them to stand up strong. The team used chairs to steady the walls.

Next, the team added the drawbridge which served as the castle’s opening that would lead people to their work space. The whole project was almost over, except for the flags! The tiny orange flags were cut out and added as a final touch to the entire design.

The creative team spent seven hours in the night just to build the cardboard castle, and another two hours for preparation and planning the task ahead of them.

It was a really tiring task but it was all worth it when their colleagues saw it in the morning! With a desk design as fabulous as what they did, everybody surely forgot about their January blues!
