Elephants are fascinating creatures. In fact, they’re the largest terrestrial mammals on the planet. They’re intelligent and empathetic. Easily recognizable for their long, flexible trunks, accounts as far back as Aristotle have shed light on their extraordinary sensibilities.

Like most mammals, elephants are protective of their loved ones. Recently, an elephant named Thongsri became a hero of sorts.

This isn’t your typical animal rescue…

Things start on a beautiful, sunny day – two men exchange a few words in a serene meadow. Their body language indicates something off in the distance. They’re both wearing dark shades and jackets.

The men continue to conspire amongst themselves. Their eyes look off into the distance.

One points off camera, indicating something of importance.

Within a matter of moments, the man on the right takes off, beelining towards an unsuspecting man several meters away.

He’s just minding his own business, perhaps taking a walk on this beautiful day. The sun continues to shine.

The first man picks up the pace, breaking into a sprint. He’s still headed right towards the other person, unrelenting. This doesn’t look like it’s going to end well.

The unsuspecting man looks up, clearly confused. He braces for impact.

The assailant incapacitates the innocent man, laying him out on the ground. What are his motives? Why would he do such a thing?

He pokes his head up, alarmed by something in the distance.

Did he steal something? What was the point of the attack?

Alarmed and still looking left, the mad man proceeds to bolt away from the scene of the crime.

He takes off like he’s seen a ghost.

Fortunately, it’s not a ghost – a large elephant, the aforementioned Thongsri, comes running into the meadow.

No wonder the assailant took off so fast.

For those wondering, certain elephants can weigh up to six tons. A single person has no chance against an elephant.

Thongsri know’s something’s up, continuing to approach the victim at a mild pace.

By this point, the culprit seems long gone. The victim looks seriously injured, seemingly writhing around in pain.

The victim continues to struggle, but Thongsri comes to his side. She tries to comfort him.

Everything’s going to be alright. The bad man’s gone.

She proceeds to comfort the victim. The perpetrator is completely out of the picture by this point.

He continues to writhe around on the ground.

He’s safe now.

The victim quickly gets up as if nothing happened and turns towards the camera. He proceeds to pat his savior elephant on the side, flashing the thumbs up gesture. I guess everything’s okay…

Confused? So was I.

Turns out, this was a fake fight and demonstration. 17-year-old Thongsri sensed her caretaker in danger and immediately came to the rescue, staving off any potential threats.

Generally, when one thinks of an animal rescue, they tend to think of a human saving a distressed or neglected dog or something – this was the exact opposite scenario. Not everyday do you get to see an elephant rescue a human in need.

Despite being a demonstration, Thongsri comes running to her caretaker’s side without a second thought. She’s sweet and protective, unwilling to let harm befall him.

Thongsri seems pretty smart and loving. If anything ever does go down, she’ll be right there at her caretaker’s side.
