Doctors help brain-dead mother deliver healthy baby

October 8th, 2019

117 days after she was declared brain-dead, a 27-year-old mom to be from the Czech Republic gave birth to her daughter via cesarean section.

The woman, whose identity remains private, suffered a brain hemorrhage and severe stroke in mid-April 2019.

Rushed to the Hospital

Despite being rushed to the hospital by helicopter, she was declared brain-dead shortly after her arrival. However, since she was 15 weeks pregnant at the time, doctors decided to do all they could to save the life of her unborn baby.

The fact that she’d had a normal pregnancy up to that point, and that she was an otherwise healthy young woman played a large part in the doctor’s decision, according to the New York Post.

For the next 117 days a team of doctors and nurses at the University Hospital in Brno, Czech Republic, worked to maintain and ensure the baby’s health, development, and growth.

While there have been other cases where babies have been delivered to mothers who were deceased, this is believed to be the first of this length, according to Global News. Doctor’s managing to artificially sustain the pregnancy of a brain-dead woman for this long is thought to be a record.

Record or not, this is nothing short of a miracle.

Ultrasounds and Simulated Walking

For more than 3 months, the medical team kept the mom on life support. Ultrasounds were done regularly to keep track of the baby’s progress. Since exercise is said to be healthy for both mom and baby—and the doctors clearly agree—a simulated exercise program was set up.

Mom would be hooked up to a machine that moved her legs in a walking motion.

Was that all the staff did?

No. Most pregnant women spend a lot of time, some of it unconsciously, stroking their tummies and interacting with their babies. Staff members would take the time to do this as well, touching and stimulating the mother’s stomach, thereby communicating with the baby.

Toys for Baby

As you can see in the above picture, these people went above and beyond the call of medical care. Despite not having a normal link to a nurturing, living, loving mother, so much was done to let this little girl know she was cared for.

The staff went so far as to leave toys on mom’s tummy, likely after having spent time talking to her. Assuring her that she was loved.

The care this team took to ensure a healthy birth is truly heartwarming.

At 34 weeks, they were rewarded when a healthy baby girl weighing 4 pounds 11 ounces and measuring 16.5 inches was delivered by cesarean section.

Now, it was time to disconnect mom from life support and let her family say goodbye. She passed away with her husband and other family members present.

In a statement to reporters, Pavel Ventruba, head of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the hospital, said, “This has really been an extraordinary case when the whole family stood together… without their support and their interest, it would never have finished this way.”

The baby is now home with her father.
